How do you measure a site for custom cabinets without missing details?
You bring a measuring tape and a phone camera. You measure length, width, height of all walls. You measure doorways, windows, plumbing, cabinet-making. You take photos of each wall. You document everything. You design from measurements, not memory.
How do you prevent design mistakes that appear during installation?
You have a pre-installation checklist. Day before install, you re-measure the site, verify nothing has changed, verify cabinets match measurements, verify fit in the space. You catch problems before they're on-site.
How do you create a cut list that minimises waste?
You design with standard board sizes in mind. You calculate every cut needed. You arrange cuts on a board plan to minimise scrap. You track actual waste per cabinet type. You refine the plan over 5-10 builds.
How do you document a design so crew can build it without you?
You create a drawing (hand sketch or CAD, doesn't matter) with dimensions on every piece. You create a build sequence - step 1, step 2, step 3. You include a photo example of the finished product. Crew builds to the drawing.
What's your cost baseline for a quote on custom cabinets?
You quote on materials (wood, hardware, finish) plus labour (hours to build based on complexity). Once you know your build time per sqm of cabinet, you quote from that rate. You have cost baseline = consistent quotes.
How do you handle changes the client asks for during build?
You get design changes in writing with the cost impact upfront. 'You want to add a drawer? That's 3 extra hours, $450. Approve?' No surprises.
How do you account for custom finishes (staining, painting, etc.) in your quote?
Finish is separate cost line: materials (stain/paint cost) plus labour (hours to apply, dry, sand, re-apply). You price it out, client chooses their finish, you quote accordingly.
