I took on a big contract, took on some new staff to handle the load and then things went really badly for me… I wasn’t present enough in the business at the time. My contract pricing wasn’t accurate. The builders I was working for weren’t crash hot  and I lost a load of money and I didn’t even realise it. I was forced to scale back my business. I realised I needed help to build back up.

When I found out about the Academy, it clicked and it made sense to me to get on board and give it a crack. One big thing that stands out to me is having coaches that are in the field and running trade businesses themselves.

It’s so relatable to us having other people in the Academy that live the same tradie lifestyle and have the same challenges.

Before the Academy, if someone asked me to check a lightswitch, I’d go in, fix the light-switch, and walk out, as quickly as possible.

We don’t have to talk badly about other tradies. It’s just changed my perception of the industry. I could talk about the Academy all day. It really has changed my mindset, my goals, and my business. The opportunity it presents is incredible.

“One of the most important things for me is creating the time freedom so I can spend quality time with my family.  Being an air conditioning business, we had huge cycles of busy summer and slow winter seasons. I used to dread the winter coming because each year brought new stresses, especially with staff and making sure they had work.  This pulled my attention away from what I care about most and so needed to make some changes to become more consistent.

“I recently moved from Melbourne to Beechworth, in regional Victoria, and I didn’t want to start my business from square one again. I’d been running it for eight years. The Academy showed me I could run a business from a different town that I live in – I didn’t think it was possible. I didn’t have this vision before I joined. But now I’ve learnt how to systemise and automate my processes so that I can delegate what’s needed.

I had just one apprentice before I joined the Academy in September last year. I’ve got my partner doing admin now, and I’ve added two qualified plumbers. I’m managing them pretty easily. My revenue has gone up about 30K a month.

“I developed a love of nature growing up in the Solomon Islands. A career advisor turned me onto arboriculture, which I didn’t even know existed, and I haven’t looked back. Business was reasonably stable, but I wasn’t getting massive growth. I wanted to make large-scale change in the world, but I didn’t have the processes to do that. I decided to piggyback on the people that had already done the processes and know what works, so I could follow that and fast-track my business.  I’ve learnt it’s about the hundreds of little things that make a big difference.

Since joining the Academy 3 months ago, I’ve put my first tradie on, another casual, with a third staff member on the way!
I’ve just got one ute and a fairly small chipper, but I’m going to add a bigger truck and a bigger chipper soon, with a four day work week for myself and the rest of the team. The driving force behind my business is creating a regenerative arboriculture industry.

I want to put more trees back than we take and make it so successful that others can mimic our model so we can reforest suburbia.

“I was pretty down and out thinking it was just going to be me operating the van for the rest of my working life. I didn’t have focus or direction with where I was going.

I joined the Academy in August last year, after four years of running my carpet cleaning business.  After just a few months of working with the coaches and learning systems, I put on my first tradie, and bought a second van.  I started my new guy on 15 hours, and he’s already up to 30. My revenue has gone up, and I’m investing more into the business for growth down the track.

My mind is a lot clearer now. The Academy has given me that sense of direction. As I keep taking these next steps, I’m getting more and more confident. I’m not afraid of the word “no” anymore.  I’ve put a line in the sand now where I don’t work weekends.  Sometimes it seems too good to be true.

When you’ve had knocks in your life, you feel like every time you take a step forward, you take two steps back.  At the moment, I’m still stepping forward, waiting for that kick in the guts.  But it hasn’t happened.

Before joining the Academy, I was just happy to settle and cruise along like everyone else.  Now I’m in the mindset that I want to retire quite comfortably and still dip my toe in the business.  It’s never going to be perfect. But you’ve got to believe in yourself and go for it.
